Academy Awards Preview

For those of you who check out of Music page, you know that Toph and I had a little competition to see who could guess the most Grammy award winners correctly. We actually did it way back for the Golden Globes too. We're trying a new style for the Academy Awards, which air this upcoming Sunday.

We are doing a movie/actor/director fantasy draft. If it sounds bizarre, it's because it is. Here's the lineup card we have to fill out:

Full-Length Motion Picture
Full-Length Motion Picture
Full-Length Motion Picture
Short Film
Documentary
Foreign Language Film
Actor
Actor
Actress
Actress
Director

A few quick notes, in case you want to play along at home:
  • Any of the Full-Length Motion Picture spots can win for picture, screenplay, animated, foreign, documentary, art, cinematography, costumes, editing, makeup, score, song, sound editing, sound mixing, or visual effects.
  • The Full-Length Motion Picture spots cannot win for actor, actress, supporting actor or actress, director, animated short, documentary short, or live-action short.
  • The Short Film spot can win for animated short, documentary short, or live-action short.
  • The Documentary spot can win for documentary or documentary short.
  • The actor and actress spots count for both lead and supporting roles.
  • Every award won counts as one point. Each spot can (obviously) win more than one point if it works out like that.
We still haven't worked out the logistics of the fantasy draft but I'm leaning towards a snake draft. No word yet on who gets the first pick. Not that I'm worried - I don't think Toph has seen any of the nominated movies and he picked Jonah Hill to win in the Golden Globes Pick 'Em.

Check Out The Resumes Of The Meth Chefs From Breaking Bad

If you don't watch Breaking Bad, you should start. It's a show about a high school Chemistry teacher who learns he has terminal lung cancer and then uses his expertise to cook meth. One of his former students helps him sell, and it's a very dramatic, interesting show.

All that aside, I IMDB'd the two meth chefs the other day and found two of the more impressive resumes in the TV/film industry. Basically, it wasn't good if one of these guys wasn't it in. Let's take a look:

Bryan Cranston (Walter White)

He started acting in 1982, and in his three decades he's been on some of the most entertaining, popular shows and TV movies:

'Jeff, Who Lives At Home' Trailer

Poor movie title. That's the first thing I noticed. But as I watched the trailer (which I only did because I'm a big Jason Segel fan) it looks like it could be a quietly good movie. It won't sell a lot of tickets because it's not about a superhero or the Jersey Shore cast.

I was expecting a dumb comedy, but I think this is going to be mostly a drama-type movie. There will be plenty of comic relief I'm sure, but the Duplass brothers (writers/directors) want viewers to leave with a new outlook on life.

Don't expect any Mike Tyson appearances like the Hangover or any Russell Brand songs about boning. But expect a very, very good movie.

'Haywire' Trailer

There is no way this movie can be bad. Actually not a chance that it's not at least good. It will probably be great. Soderbergh. Tatum. Douglas. Banderas. McGregor. Fassbender. People who (talented or not) can be identified simply by last name. Gina Carano is a smoke and a muy thai master. And there are actors is billed as "Helpful Guy" and "Rodrigo's New Wife". Just figured I'd throw that in there to spoil the plot twist (Rodrigo gets remarried).

The Real Golden Globes Recap

Jay based his recap on the "Important Categories."  I'm pretty sure they're all weighted the same amount man, so who are you to choose which are important and which aren't?  And whose fault is it you didn't pick most of them?  Forget that bullshit, here are the real results.

Golden Globes Recap

Let's see how we did. Keep in mind, I didn't pick more than half of the categories and Toph picked most of his based on ridiculous things. The important ones:

Chris' Golden Globe Picks

Jay and I noticed that the Golden Globes were today, so we figured we'd make our picks considering we're highly qualified to give our opinions.  Personally, I've been to the movies once since about a year ago, so this will be pretty interesting.
